Lore - Herbs - Arrowroot

Arrowroot is one of the rarest plants native to Cryptillia, growing in isolated patches of ancient woodland where dense tree cover and nearby running water provide the conditions it requires. The plant is recognised by its narrow, arrow-shaped leaves, which grow close to the ground above a long, tapering root. It favours moist, well-drained soil and is rarely found in open woodland or areas exposed to prolonged sunlight. Even in forests where Arrowroot has previously been discovered, locating another specimen can take considerable time.
The root is used as a component in Teleport spells, enabling wizards to transport themselves instantly between locations without physically crossing the distance between them. Unlike many common spellcasting herbs, Arrowroot cannot simply be gathered by removing its leaves. The root must be carefully extracted from the surrounding soil, a process which usually destroys the plant. Its slow growth and limited natural distribution make it exceptionally difficult to obtain, and supplies are often closely guarded by those fortunate enough to possess them.
Harvesting Arrowroot is extremely dangerous without the proper equipment. The root is covered in a thick, waxy substance which is both sticky and highly toxic. Contact with exposed skin can cause severe poisoning, and there is no known cure for the effects of the toxin. The sticky coating makes accidental contact particularly hazardous, as it is difficult to remove once transferred to the skin. Experienced herbalists recommend using specialist digging forks to loosen the surrounding soil and lift the root without touching it directly. Attempts to pull Arrowroot from the ground by hand have resulted in numerous fatalities, and even experienced gatherers are advised to exercise extreme caution.
